My class LOVES Mo Wilems "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" and all of Mo Wilems. We decided we were going to write out own version of the story! Each student wrote and illustrated a page to complete our class book. We have several teachers retiring at my school and my students were curious to know what retiring really meant, so while explaining to them I was also telling them our Superintendet was retiring, they got so excited and said that's the book we want to write...So we wrote "Don't Let the Pigeon be the Superintendent" check out our book at Scribble Press here.

Today we played Spelling Battleship. I created this sheet the other day and I couldn't wait to try it out with my class! They had a lot of fun! You can get this sheet at my TpT store.
I always want to give my great volunteers an end of year gift because their help is sooo appreciated, but in on a budget and I want to get every volunteer something! So it always leaves me in a pickle! :-)
So, this year I decided to get each volunteer a small with a special note attached. I have the greatest parents and kiddos! I got some really great gifts! Thank all of you so much!! :-)
Today we celebrated Cinco De Mayo with one of the other First Grade classes! Both classes had so much fun! We learned about Mexico's Independence Day, the Mexican flag, maracas, piñatas,, sopapias, we made confetti eggs, and we took each students picture in a sombrero!
This week we did our animal research projects! I explained to my students that they each would check out a library book about a different animals and complete research writing papers and on Friday make an oral presentation to teach the class about their animal! They all did such an awesome job! Each day during our writing time we would complete one of these papers front and back, then today we completed our research papers and made our research books and have our presentations! I filmed each one of my students giving their presentation and I will e-mail them to their parents and we will also watch them on Monday! They love watching themselves, they feel famous!
Here is an example of one of the research papers. I got this research paper from TpT for FREE here.
Early this year we wrote thank you cards to soldiers in Kuwait! One of my student's dad is there and we wanted to thank him and his fellow soldiers for what they do everyday! And yesterday we got a letter back! My kiddos were SO excited! They were super happy and so we decided to use our formal letter template to write back and practice our letter writing skills! I also let them draw him pictures for him on the back! Here are some examples...
You can get this printable for FREE here.
I thought it was awesome that most of them wanted to write that they missed him and most of them haven't even met him! But I have taught them all year we are a team, a family, and we stick together, so they have our little soldier in my class' back! :-)
This week we are learning about animals! I have my students do animal research projects and on Friday teach the class all about their animal. One of the activities we do during the week is our habitat board. I give each student a half a sheet of white construction paper, they fold it in half, write what type of animal they are researching on the front and draw the animal in its habitat.
Our habitat board has water, dirt/desert, and grasslands! Check it out! This week we studied Spring and rainbows. Each week I try to incorporate a science experiment into our theme normally on Friday. I get my lab coat out and safety goggles and we have a lot of fun and we learn a lot! I want to promote scientific thinking even in my young students and also create critical thinking skills and my Lively Learners LOVE science! They had so much excitement during this experiment!
Materials you need: Bowl Milk Food coloring (red, blue, yellow) Science observation sheet (can be purchased here) Step 1: pass each student a bowl and put a small amount of milk into the bowl, you really only need enough to cover the bottom of the bowl. Step 2: place one-two drops of red, yellow, and blue food coloring in a triangle shape like this... Then, students can draw what they see in the circle for Observation 1. Also, while they are watching and watching they can write what they did under observation 1.
Step 3: students continue to watch the milk and colors to see what happens. Here are some pictures as the experiment is happening. At the end of the experiment colors will mix together like this.
BUT, what I LOVE is that they all turn out different!
*you can also but dish washing soap in the middle if you want to, I always skip that step. *make sure you tell students that if they bump or stir their bowl they will mess up the experiment and end up with an ugly brown or grey bowl of liquid! And the last step is complete the rest of the science observation sheet! Here is a completed form!
Leave a comment below after you complete this experiment with your kiddos and let me know how it went and what they thought!! :-)
Thanks for stopping by! This week we did lots of Spring activities and during several of our writing times we wrote some full in poems! One is using the five senses during Spring and the other one is a simile poem about rainbows and colors. Both of these can be purchased at my TpT store here. Check out our pictures below!
