Let me first start off by saying... I LOVE SCIENCE! I do science experiments all the time in my classroom and every time I do these science experiments I always wear my lab coat and safety goggles. My classes always think its so exciting! So don't laugh to hard when you see the upcoming pictures of me in my lab coat!
This week we have discussed everything Arctic! So today, Friday, we did a science experiment and investigation. We asked the questions... How does blubber help animals stay warm, how would it feel if we had blubber, what does blubber feel like? So in order to answer these questions we did some science investigations! First, I got a bowl, ice, graduated cylinder of water, 2 sets of rubber gloves, and last crisco!
First, I had each student dip one hand in the ice water to test out how cold it felt on our bare hands.

First, I had each student dip one hand in the ice water to test out how cold it felt on our bare hands.
Then, I got my set of rubber gloves on and I feeled one of the other rubber gloves with crisco and had the first student put on the other glove. So the student only had one hand with a glove on. Once I got done filling the other glove with crisco I slide the crisco filled glove on over the other glove the student was wearing and made sure the crisco was spread over their hands and had them dip their hand into the ice cold water to give it a test!
*note the student cannot submerge the glove fully into the water. The part on the wrist must stay out of the water so water doesn't go into the inside of the glove.

Every student got to have a turn. Our experiment yielded that blubber really does help animals stay warm by giving them lots of layers to insulate!
